No one in the world is more prepared to bask in the glow of American rock stardom than the members of Tokio Hotel. Humanoid is only their second U.S. release, the follow up to 2008's Scream, but to millions of fans across the globe, they're already icons.
"Things are just starting for us in the US," says Bill Kaulitz, the band's front man, the leader of a worldwide army of black leather- and eyeliner-clad devotees. "What we've already experienced has been just great, and we're looking forward to it starting again."
The biggest act to come out of Germany in 20 years, Tokio Hotel has gone 10x platinum, scored four No. 1 singles and sold out arenas and stadiums across Europe. They scored a Best New Artist VMA from MTV in 2008.
Their rocket to success launched in 2001 when Bill and his twin brother Tom -- the band's hip-hop-tinged, dreadlocked guitarist -- formed the band along with bassist Georg Listing, now 22, and drummer Gustav Schafer, now 21. They started at age 10 performing for small crowds around their hometown, Magdeburg, a salt-mining village that was formerly part of East Germany.
Growing up in one of the most dismal parts of Germany, Bill and Tom were different from their classmates, almost alien. They were the underdogs. The twins knew that they had to break out of there. Tom had started fooling around with a guitar at age 7 and at 13 together with an already spiky-haired Bill, they caught the attention of some of Europe's best-known producers (including Humanoid producer David Jost) and solidified their heartfelt pop-rock formula. Originally called Devlish, they changed their name before releasing their first German-language record, Schrei (Scream in English). By 2005, they embarked on what would be the most successful debut tour of Germany by a new artist. In 2007, they released their second German record, Zimmer 483 (Room 483 in English), and were selling out monster European arena shows in minutes. Like wildfire, the band gained the attention of an entire generation. In France, the group's popularity exploded. They went from playing small club gigs for 500 to performing at the foot of the Eiffel Tower for a crowd of 500,000 screaming fans phonetically belting out the words to Tokio Hotel's German hits. Soon after they made a history by becoming the first German band to score a #1 hit on the Israeli radio charts. In 2008, after a grueling 43 shows, Bill endured surgery for cysts on his vocal cords but was back on the road performing around the world within two months, shortly after Scream was released for the first time in the U.S. in 2008. Humanoid is packed with much of the same emotion that has connected with multitudes of young fans. And in this age of Rock Band and Guitar Hero, the record is full of opportunities for audience participation. The first single, "Automatic" is a metallic anthem with layered, buzzing guitars, stomping percussion, and a falsetto chorus made to be belted out by a stadium full of people. "World Behind My Wall" redefines the power ballad with depth, introspection, musical confidence and an irresistible sing-along chorus.
While recording this time around, though, the band was in its most experimental phase to date. They tracked songs in Hamburg, Miami, and L.A. "Bill drove us all crazy, constantly coming in with things, even though the old songs weren't finished yet," says Tom, who's fond of frequently ribbing his brother. "Apart from that, we just didn't limit ourselves, and we used new instruments."
There are more electronic sounds on Humanoid. The first single "Automatic" explores the relationships between every day emotions and every day conveniences.
"How many things happen automatically every day?" Bill asks. "The door opens and closes automatically, shifting gears in a car; a camera lens -- all of those are always positive things, but when the mechanical quality of the automatic meets human things like love, then suddenly it becomes extremely negative. Love has to be spontaneous and genuine, never automatic and cold.Ӏ That's the theme that moves people.
Along with the new sounds, new subjects, new live show, and even Bill's new style, longtime fans will still find the constant connection to Tokio Hotel's raw honesty and emotion.

En 2006, Andy «Six» Biersack, de entonces quince años de edad, comenzó la búsqueda de otros músicos para formar una banda «moderna» de heavy metal.2 En 2007, a través de California DGK Studios, la banda lanzó su primer EP, Sex & Hollywood, con Biersack como vocalista, Johnny Herold y Nate Shipp en las guitarras, Phil Cenedella en el bajo y Chris Riesenberg en la batería.20
En 2009 y tras varios cambios de formación, Andy conoció a la baterista Sandra Alvarenga, la cual posteriormente se unió a Black Veil Brides. Con Sandra en la banda, en junio de 2009 grabaron el vídeo de la canción «Knives and Pens». Este alcanzó una favorable cantidad de visitas en YouTube en el mes de su lanzamiento. Después de esto, Ashley Purdy se unió como bajista, tras haber sido contactado por internet. Posteriormente se unió el guitarrista Jinxx. Este último recomendó a su amigo Jake Pitts para ser el guitarrista líder de la banda.2 En septiembre de 2009, la agrupación firmó con el sello discográfico StandBy. En diciembre de 2009 comenzaron su primera gira musical por los Estados Unidos, On Leather Wings Tour.21 2
En julio de 2010, Black Veil Brides lanzó su álbum debut, We Stitch These Wounds.2 El álbum debutó en la posición número treinta y seis del Billboard 200 y en Hard Rock Albums obtuvo la posición número tres,7 8además de haber llegado al número uno de la lista Independent Albums, la cual aloja exclusivamente álbumes lanzados por sellos discográficos independientes.9 5 10 El álbum vendió 11 000 copias en la semana de su lanzamiento.22 En junio de 2010 se publicó el primer y único sencillo del álbum, «Perfect Weapon», del cual se lanzó un vídeo musical dirigido por Patrick Fogarty.11
En septiembre de 2010, Black Veil Brides informó a través del sitio MySpace que su baterista Sandra Alvarenga había dejado la banda.23 El comunicado decía: «A menudo en la vida, llega un momento en que quienes amamos encuentran la necesidad de tomar distancia, ya sea para mejorar un problema personal o explorar otras facetas de la vida [...] Sandra nos ha expresado la necesidad de seguir adelante con su carrera musical y de hacerlo por otro camino».23 También se informó que el nuevo baterista de la banda sería Christian Coma.23 En octubre del mismo año, la banda participó en la gira Entertainment Or Death Tour junto a bandas como William Control, Motionless In White, The Birthday Massacre, Dommin y Aural Vampire.24 25
2011–presente: Set The World On Fire
En febrero de 2011, Black Veil Brides realizó la gira God Save The Scream Tour con el supergrupo Murderdolls.21 26 27 28 En abril del mismo año, Andy Six anunció que desde ahí en adelante quería ser llamado por su verdadero apellido, Biersack.29 Él dijo: «No necesariamente quiero eliminar ese nombre [...] Fue un mecanismo de defensa cuando era niño, pero ya no tengo que esconderme tras eso. Estoy feliz con lo que soy».29 Ese mismo mes, la banda anunció que su álbum Set The World On Fire sería publicado el 14 de junio de 2011.12 El mismo sería su primer lanzamiento en un sello major, Lava Records.12 Black Veil Brides grabó Set The World On Fire en California con Josh Abraham, quién anteriormente había trabajado con Linkin Park, 30 Seconds To Mars, Korn, entre otros.12 «Todo es más grande. Todo vino de forma natural. No es un intento de superar nuestro primer álbum, sólo queremos mostrar la forma en que hemos crecido como banda y compositores», comentó Biersack a la revista Billboard.12
Los sencillos «Fallen Angels» y «The Legacy» fueron lanzados el 10 y 31 de mayo de 2011, mientras que sus respectivos vídeos musicales fueron estrenados el 24 y 31 de mayo del mismo año.16 30 18 31 32 19 El álbum Set The World On Fire fue lanzado el 14 de junio de 2011, en su primera semana vendió 23 000 copias en los Estados Unidos, lo que le permitió debutar en la posición diecisiete en el Billboard 200.13 Por otro lado, también logró entrar en la posición cincuenta y cuatro en la lista de álbumes de Reino Unido.14
El 10 de octubre de 2011, se lanzó el vídeo de la canción «Rebel Love Song».33 El 26 de octubre de 2011, Biersack sufrió un accidente en un concierto en Luxemburgo, donde se fracturó la nariz.34 El accidente obligó a la banda a cancelar una serie de conciertos que tenían planificados para el Reino Unido.35 En noviembre anunciaron una nueva gira por Reino Unido e Irlanda, la cual iniciaría en marzo de 2012.36 El 13 de diciembre de 2011, Black Veil Brides lanzó su segundo EP, Rebels, el cual cuenta con versiones de las canciones «Rebel Yell» de Billy Idol y «Unholy» de KISS.37 38 Ese mismo día, la revista Revolver nombró a Andy Biersack una de las «100 mejores estrellas de rock vivas».39
En una entrevista con David Massen de Rock Industry, Ashley Purdy dijo que la banda esperaba lanzar su tercer álbum de estudio a finales de 2012.40
